The Verdict:

"The Founder" is based on the book "Grind It Out" which portrays the personal story of Ray Kroc’s and his amazing success of making McDonald’s into the food chain we worship at today.

McDonald's was first opened in 1940 by brothers Dick and Mac McDonald, a whole fourteen years before Ray Kroc came into the picture to inject, into the business, his much needed passion and drive. Many people would be unaware of that though, since Ray liked to tell everyone he founded McDonald's in 1954. In some ways he's right, the McDonald's we know today was greatly influenced by Ray and his ideas on food and franchising. There's also a surprisingly dark period in the early stages of the McDonald's evolution resulting in Ray running the McDonald brothers out of business. You can probably guess how that turned out.

Ray Kroc was a very determined man, always looking for the next big thing even if that meant losing his family. Ray had a massive ego and wasn’t going to let something as black and white as a contract get in the way of him making money.

The amazing story of Ray Kroc, played by Michael Keaton, is a story that will make you look at McDonalds in a different light. On one hand if it wasn’t for Ray, McDonald’s wouldn’t be the global success it is today. On the other hand, Ray destroyed the original creators of the business so he could get rich off it.

I didn’t invent the hamburger. I just took it more seriously than anyone else…We take the hamburger business more seriously than anyone else. - Ray Kroc

The movie is a slow running biographical story but it is a must see for those interested in business, marketing, commercial real estate and tasty burgers.

If you’re not a risk taker, you should get the hell out of business. - Ray Kroc
