The Plot:

It's the Roaring `20s and Prohibition hasn't stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve, and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules, and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll.

The Verdict:

From the poster, this 1920's based film was going to be an interesting adaption of Dennis Lehane's award winning novel.

The movie starts off in Boston 1917, in the midst of the Rum Wars between the Irish and the Italians. Our main character Joe Coughlin, a soldier who fought for his country during World War One. He left as a soldier and returned a gangster, robbing banks and the Mob all in the name of love. Love for Joe came in the form of Emma Gould, the girlfriend of the head of the Irish mob, Albert White. From the outset you know this relationship was never going to last and Joe would be beaten down by Albert after one last heist. Of course, Emma and Joe were going to move way and live happily ever after. Too predictable.

The last heist Joe tries to pull off with his crew brings a lot of heat and it ends up catching up with him at his lowest point. From petty theft to cop killer his father Thomas Coughlin, who was the city's police chief, could not protect his son anymore.

Joe only gets a light 3 year jail sentence before he is released with revenge in his heart after finding out Emma was killed by Albert White for her betrayal of him.

Joe approaches the only other person who has a grudge against Albert White in Boston, the head of the Italian mob, Maso Pescatore. Joe and Maso come to a deal that Joe will go down to Florida to run Albert White out of town.

Joe goes to Tampa and starts partnering up with Florida’s biggest run suppliers, the Cubans, run by Esteban Surez and his sister Graciela.

Joe went there for the revenge of White but little did he know he would find love again. Romance between Joe and Graciela bloom as Joe increases his hold on the Tampa run trade under his control.

The movie end as you would expect. Predictably.

It was a slow long winded movie, which had amazing sets and costumes. Little did I know that this movie was Directed by Ben Affleck, Written by Ben Affleck based off the novel, Starred by Ben Affleck, Produced by Ben Affleck, funded and produced by his closest friends e.g. Leonardo DiCaprio.
